MISTY by Matthew Sharpe

MISTY
by Matthew Sharpe

I’m as helpless as a kitten up a tree,
a kitten who has just killed
and eaten her owner,
actions she experienced as “lilac.”

The kitten’s name is Matthew.
She is from Chicago
and of Polish extraction.
Her wish: to be spray paint.

“If I were spray paint,
I wouldn’t have killed my owner,
whose name is also Matthew,
and eaten him.

I’d be on the wall
in the hall.
I’d spell ‘Fuck All Dogs,’
and possess beauty

that does not come
with the need to be petted.”
The Matthew
who is the kitten

who is the spray paint that says
“Fuck All Dogs” will be painted over
with the Matthew who is the kitten
who is the spray paint

that says “lilac.”
That paint will be made of poison.
Anyone who reads it will die.
Being a kitten is harsh.
